Saint Nicholas’ Collegiate Church in Galway is the oldest church in Ireland and has a great history that is still functioning. It also serves as a guide for many. It is the tallest church in the city. The tall tower of the church serves as a route map for the ship captains to enter the gulf of Galway. For many centuries it has served as a guide for the city’s people to reach their hometown.
We certainly understand the importance of guidance. Jesus, while preaching to the disciples in the upper room before being taken to heaven, instructed the vital role that the Holy Spirit will play in the lives of every believer. He promised, “However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth;” (John 16:13).
What a unique gift God has given us! In this world full of confusion and fear, guidance is often needed. We might easily choose the wrong direction when wrongly influenced by the culture or when we choose to do according to our sinful nature (1 John 2:15-17). We might be counseled poorly by our so-called mentors. But we should remember that we have the Holy Spirit within us to show us the right direction. How grateful we should be because Jesus has given us the Helper to give hope in our hopeless situations. If we follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ, we can be sure that we will reach the right destination.
