Today’s Bible characters: Martha and Mary
Scripture: Luke 10:38-42
Israel is a nation surrounded by mountains, hills, and valleys. Jesus during His period ministered in and around those areas. Every time Jesus visited Jerusalem, He made sure of going to Bethany, a small village. Because Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, the most loved family by Jesus lived in Bethany.
Once when Jesus entered the village, Martha welcomed Him into her house. She wanted to serve Jesus as he might be tired of traveling to places preaching the law of God. Martha not only invited Jesus into her house but also served Him as much as she could. Like Martha, we should also invite Jesus into our house and make Him the head of our house.
In this modern world, we see many women dominating in families. Women try to take control of the family. But the Bible says that the husband is the head of the family. No matter if he is a drunkard or involved in evil things we should give him respect and love. We do have equal rights, but we should consider him, involve and inform him about everything in the family. Above all, we should pray for their well-being. If your husband is addicted to any sinful nature, pray for him. Your prayer will definitely change his behavior. We should never forget that it is God who has made the husband head of the family.
Although Martha welcomed Jesus into the house, her sister Mary had a close relationship with God. She sat at Jesus’ feet and heard His word. Being a woman who builds the family, we should also spend our time in the feet of Jesus. Like Mary, we should also have a close relationship with Jesus. When we pray to God regularly, He will talk to us. We will be able to listen to His voice. We should receive the good portion – the Word of God in our lives just like Mary did. For that, we should have a close relationship with God.
“But one thing is needed, and Mary has chosen that good part, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:42
As a woman who builds the family, we should spend time meditating the word of God and praying every day. When we do that God will bless our family.
The adulteress came to Jesus and He forgave her for all her sins
The Caananite woman came to Jesus for her child and was delivered.
The woman with 12 years of infirmity came to Jesus and received healing.
Martha invited Jesus into her house.
Mary chose the good portion – the Word of God for her life.
Let us not live a life-pleasing world. Rather let us strive to have a close relationship with God, to grow more in our spiritual life, to lead a life of example. When we ask God for His help to lead such a life, He will not only help you but also make you flourish and keep you as a blessing to many.
