Family Life!

Today’s verse: Matthew 19:5-6.

… ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.’ “So then , they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Scripture: Matthew 19:1-12

The Pharisees who followed Jesus were keen about finding fault in Him. In today’s passage, we also see what Jesus preaches about family life.

Live in harmony (verse 1-6):

Although the strings of musical instruments are tied in different pitches, it gives harmony when we play it. In the same way, a husband and wife come together from different backgrounds, cultures and they both have their own distinct characters and personal opinions. But they build a sweet life because they were united in the presence of God. They are called to understand and accept each other and live in harmony (Luke 16:18, Malachi 2:14-16). Man shall not create a dispute amongst them for any reason!

Who can part? (verse 7-9):

Divorce has become a common thing these days, and Christians top the number of divorces. Although the Bible does not support divorce, look at the reason Jesus gives in verse 9. As much as possible, elders should try to help couples stay together when some misunderstandings arise (Genesis 2:18, 1 Corinthians 11:2-12).

Singleness (verse 10-12):

Jesus stresses that family life was a discipline created by God in verse 11. Also, verse 11 says that it is a boon to be unmarried. Apostle Paul was unmarried. We read the advice of Paul about marriage life in 1 Corinthians chapter 7. Those who are called to live unmarried shouldn’t marry, and those called to marry shouldn’t stay single.

Remember, God’s will is fulfilled only in a life where husband and wife live together!

Dear God,
You be the head of our family life and lead us. Amen.
