1. Speak the truth (verse 33 – 37):
Let us examine our speech. Sometimes we add our own words, sometimes we lie to cheat others, sometimes we speak words that build false hope. Let us change our opinion that speaking the truth is a tough thing and understand that God expects us to speak only the truth. And seek God’s help to be truthful and speak only the truth. In the Old Testament, it is written not to swear falsely but to perform the oaths to God. To avoid performing the oaths, the jews started to swear on various things. Seeing this, Jesus says not to swear at all. And He clearly calls us to speak only the truth in verse 37.
“But let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes’, and you ‘No’ be ‘No’. For whatever is more than these is from the evil one.”
2. Do not take revenge (verse 38 – 42):
These verses teach us what to do when we are affected/hurt by someone. The “tit for tat” approach will never end a problem rather it will build up a problem. God expects us not to go against a person who does evil. We can turn a person into God’s disciple by showing love towards him/her even if he/she did something against us. We should develop within ourselves a mentality to win evil with good. We can read that from verse 40,
“If anyone wants to sue you and take away your tunic, let him have your cloak also.
3. Love your enemies ( 43 – 48):
To hate your enemies is a principle that was traditionally followed by religious leaders. But as a child of God, Jesus Christ calls us to love our enemies. It is one of the toughest things to do. But the key is to pray for them. You will be able to forgive and love your enemies when you pray for them. If we follow the footsteps of Jesus Christ we can also live a contented life.
44. But I say to you, love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who spitefully use you and persecute you,
Keep asking yourself that how can I show this world that I am a disciple of God. Search for the answer in Bible and follow it.
God,
Give me the understanding and wisdom to know your expectations and live accordingly. Amen!
