But his(Lot’s) wife looked back behind him, and she became a pillar of salt. Genesis 19:26
“Remember Lot’s wife. Luke 17:32
Scripture: Genesis 19
When we read Genesis 19th chapter, we see that God decided to destroy Sodom. Yet He wanted to save the righteous – Lot and his family. So He sent two angels to drive his family away from the town. But Lot’s wife was worried about the house that they had built in Sodom and the money and things they left there.
Since they led a moral life in the town of Sodom, the angels held them by their hands and led them out of the town and said,
“…Escape for your life. Do not look behind you nor stay anywhere in the plain. Escape to the mountains, lest you be destroyed.” Genesis 19:17
The angels insisted Lot and his family not to look back but to move forward. But Lot’s wife looked back because she was materialistic. She could’ve chosen to be thankful for her life but her thoughts were in the materials that she was losing. This hid the life God has given for her graciously and made her disobey God’s word.
How are we in our lives? Are we looking back even after accepting Jesus Christ? Or are we looking forward, focusing on what is in front of us?
I know a man who was running his business in India. He was a God-fearing man. He used to organize gospel meetings and provide financial support to some of the ministries. But his wife was a materialistic woman who did not like her husband providing support for ministries. She considered that as a waste of money. She always wanted her husband to concentrate on his business full time. She kept complaining of him for helping the needy as well. This kept irritating the husband and eventually, he became an alcoholic. He slowly became so addicted to alcohol that he couldn’t take care of his business and ended up in loss. They lost their house and everything they had because of his addiction. If you see, had the woman been supportive to the husband he would have been doing so well in his business. But her intentions weren’t good and that spoiled everything!
“…And the contentions of a wife are a continual dripping.” Proverbs 19:13
Sometimes when our husbands come back home after work for lunch or dinner we keep complaining about the things at home and begin a quarrel. The husband who is hungry, will he have the heart to eat? If we keep picking up on our husbands all the time, we won’t have peace at home and our children growing up in such a situation will also become quarrelsome.
I remember a testimony by a man that I saw on a TV channel when I was young. These are the words he said. I am married for seven years now. I used to be so arrogant. I won’t even say a nice word to my wife. I never used to be loving towards her. But because of her patience, I have accepted Jesus Christ today. She is a woman of God and she has turned my life into a pleasing one in the sight of God.
Can your husband give such testimony today? If not, spend time in the word of God today, I am sure God will change you and make you a blessing to your family. He will build your family through you.
…will be continued!
